But perhaps the biggest news for hundreds of thousands of warehouse employees is that the online retail giant is modifying its infamous Time off Task employee tracking software to provide more breathing room for bathroom breaks, conversations with supervisors, and equipment repair.  The changes, revealed in a blog post by Dave Clark, CEO of the worldwide consumer division, comes on the heels of another report about the company's unusually high warehouse injury rate.  "Starting today, we're now averaging Time off Task over a longer period to ensure that there's more signal and less noise—reinforcing the original intent of the program, and focusing Time off Task conversations on how we can help," Clark wrote in the post published Tuesday.  "The goal is to re-focus the conversations on instances where there are likely true operational issues to resolve. We believe this change will help ensure the Time off Task policy is used in the way it was intended." On the same day as Clark's post, union-backed Strategic Organizing Center published a study that it said showed Amazon fulfillment centers had 5.9 serious injuries for every 100 employees, a rate nearly 80% higher than non-Amazon warehouses. Tuesday's 9-0 vote prohibits Seattle-area county administrative and executive offices from using facial recognition technology or information to identify suspects or potential suspects. Privacy advocates have sought to ban the use of such technology because of its varied accuracy in identifying suspects, algorithmic racial biases, and perceived encroachment on civil liberties. "The use of facial recognition technology by government agencies poses distinct threats to our residents, including potential misidentification, bias, and the erosion of our civil liberties," King County Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles said in a statement. Kohl-Welles added that facial recognition technology has great potential for misuse. "Our vote today makes King County the first county in the nation to pass this type of ban," she said. The ban does not restrict individual cities, citizens, or schools within King County from using facial recognition technology, only official county government offices. And it does not restrict county investigators from trading information with other law enforcement agencies as long as they did not specifically request information gleaned from facial recognition technology. In all, the legislation approved by the council is "fairly innocuous," said Os Keyes, a facial recognition expert in the University of Washington's human-centered design and engineering department. Keyes praised the legislation as broad enough to help protect civil liberties while being sufficiently narrow that it does not block legitimate investigations. "It doesn't limit interagency cooperation," they said, "and it limits general surveillance on a day-to-day basis. It's thoughtful and short." Facial recognition technology — from government-enabled CCTV systems to Amazon's Rekognition system — has become increasingly controversial as privacy advocates assert it is creating a perpetual surveillance state. Amazon and Microsoft recently renewed their bans on sales of such technology to domestic law enforcement. Keyes, a doctoral candidate at the university, said the legislation accomplishes two significant things, one obvious and the other less so but equally important. First, it prevents the county from setting up a facial recognition camera system throughout the county. These are not simply video security systems; they are data gathering systems that interpret, analyze, and store facial data to alert authorities about potential suspects. But the tech is not always accurate, especially when parsing faces with darker complexions. Second, Keyes said, it helps halt the secret email exchanges between investigators who send photos around for other agencies to run through facial analysis systems for departments that lack the technology or have banned it. "They have done this in the past to evade the need for a warrant," Keyes said. "This is not hypothetical; they had long mailing lists to send photos around on an informal basis." The use of a private, law enforcement mailing list designed for informal, specific sharing facial recognition tech in Washington state was documented in 2019 by the website OneZero. The "cross-department requests…includes officers from at least a dozen police departments, from large organizations like the Seattle police and Pierce County Sheriff's Department to smaller ones like the Richland and Marysville police," OneZero reported. Keyes said the new bill should prevent this type of sharing — at least when it comes to King County law enforcement. Moreover, they said, it provides recourse if it continues. "It provides a right-of-action," they said. "So the person who is surveilled can sue." Cities such as Portland and San Francisco have approved such bans. The Washington chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union applauded King County's new restriction. "With this vote, King County joins a growing number of local jurisdictions across the nation that have approved similar restrictions," Jennifer Lee of ACLU Washington said in a statement. She added: "Now it's time for a federal ban on government use of facial recognition to ensure that no one's civil liberties and civil rights are violated by a pervasive and often inaccurate technology that disproportionately misidentifies people of color and heightens the risk of surveillance and deadly encounters with law enforcement in already marginalized and overpoliced communities." However, that’s about to change. All the Echo speakers and Ring security cameras out there will soon be linked in a massive mesh network beginning next Tuesday, June 8th, which is when the new Amazon Sidewalk service will be turned on. This new Amazon feature allows all your Amazon smart home devices to share your home WI-Fi with Amazon gadgets that belong to strangers. The feature is meant to improve coverage and increase security, offering devices an additional network connection to fall back to if the primary internet service becomes unavailable. As secure as Sidewalk may be, Amazon has had some privacy mishaps in the past that were related to Echo devices. With that in mind, allowing strange devices to use your Wi-Fi network might sound worrisome to some people. But Amazon Sidewalk is an optional feature, meaning that any Echo and Ring product owners can opt out of it and ensure their devices will not share their Wi-Fi connection with other Amazon devices in the neighborhood. You’ll have to be proactive if you don’t want your devices to be a part of the Sidewalk service, however, because it will automatically be enabled by default. Because it's not the commitment that matters. You can commit to a workout program or a diet, and begin with the best intentions.  But, what do you owe those plans? Absolutely nothing.  If you let down the plan, it's frustrating. But, it doesn't hurt.  Commitment alone has limited value.  That's why many committed people don't succeed. If you want to change, you need to attach your commitment to your soul. Or, at least it should feel that way. It has to be deeply personal.  It needs to operate at a different level.  Effective commitments are a paradox. They are an uncomfortable mix of fear, excitement, optimism, pessimism, and insecurity.  That's where you find the breakthroughs. Self-improvement lives within everyone, but it's usually buried under uncertainty, self-sabotage, or prior failure. To make commitment work, you need to be willing to risk something valuable. When you are ready to change, connect to more than what you want to change.  Focus on who you want to become, or what you fail to lose if you don't follow through on your commitment. Set stakes. You can get creative and use almost any fruit from your Farmer's Market haul—watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, peaches, honeydew, etc. The prep: Just chop and freeze. Ingredients 2 cups frozen watermelon cubes 1 lime 1/4 banana, fresh or frozen 1/4 cup warm water Fresh mint (optional) Directions Combine watermelon, juice of 1 lime, banana, and half the amount of water (reserve the other half, add if needed) into a high-power blender.
